DIFFERENCE BETWEEN POEM AND POETRY
Its DIFFERENT TYPES, NORMS &
THE THREE STEPS OF POEM PROCESS
Abstract:-
In English literature, we have
many Literary Terms; and we student have to glade about that people like M.H. Abrams
who wrote A Glossary of Literary Terms 7TH Edition In English literature
we have treasure of literary terms among them this research paper will guide us
about What is Difference between Poem and Poetry and its norm and Types in
English Literature. First of all we can see that what the main literary terms
are in short. All Literary terms plays a very significant role and all have its
own precious charm and meaning with Literary and Wordly manner.
During
the time of our Bachelor Degree I had observed many my collogues that they knew
difference between definitional way but if we asks them they became confused,
so, here, I write this research paper for those my pals and alienated pals who
have some this kind of confusion between these two literary terms. So the motto
of this research paper is to solve and to five the answer and solutions only
for academic purpose in English Literature.
Introduction:-
World’s
any literature you can find the Prose and Poetry. This prose and poetry have
many types like in prose there are Epic, Short-Stories, Novel, and Drama etc.
and in the other side there is Poetry where we can find Ballad, Poems, Elegy,
Sonnet, Haiku etc. so all these types have its own charm and literature if you
find Epic there are Mahabharata, Ramayana, Quran, Bible, Geeta Buddha-Sanhita etc.
where as in poetry there are sonnets with its types like patriarchal sonnet,
Miltonic Sonnet, Shakespearean sonnet as well. So, if we read about Mira’s
Poetry or Valmikies Ramayana we enjoyed a lot due to its story and its heart
touch philosophical charm of poetry which tell us huge in short and sweet lines
but if we want to understand poetry we have deep knowledge as well as wisdom to
understand it. The Prose is full of stories, mysteries, miracles and
supernatural themes. The prose is understand by kids, people and youngster
where as poetry is full of pleasure and inner philosophical and poetry is
understand by experts, and old aged person. Some poetry are so hard to
understand because the words of the poetry are so intense and so old and rich
that we are not able to understand if the translator translate the poetry in
our birth language or in mother tongue we can at last understand but not fully
still at the end we have confusion in it. That’s why it is said that….
“Poets’ are god gifted if we want
to understand them and their writing we need as much as knowledge and power as
well.”
Since
the time of planet earth there are many evolution and revolution had been
occurred where many Sufi, Mughal, Arabic, Urdu, Persian, Indian, Anglo-Indian,
Anglo-American, Indo-Canadian, Indo-African etc. wrote billions and trillions
of things in their own native languages. Now last few centuries there are new
subject also developed by education system to understand these enormous and par
excellent writings. In India there is India
Writing in English etc. new subject is developed in master as well as under
graduation level. So, at last we come to know that this research paper will
show and bring us to the great knowledge full site where it clarify and
differentiate what is a ture sense and meaning of poetry as well as prose.
Difference between Poem and
Poetry:-
A Poem is
a literary creation where as Poetry is the art form. A Poem is a single piece of poetry which is complete
in itself. Poetry is the collective terms used to describe a group of poems,
which may or may not be related by theme, author, or style. The two words poem
and poetry are interchangeably used through there is a difference in their
inner meanings. Their connotations do differ to some extent. A poem is a piece
of literary work. Poetry is an art form.
A
poet is who composes poems and creates poetry in the process. He is just like a
potter who is skillful in making pots and creating the art form of pottery in
the process. He alone can be called a poet who creates poetry frequently. He
who composes poems occasionally cannot be called a poet but then he can be
called a versifier. Poetry is the result of the description of concept and
feelings by means of the use of the various elements of a language. Sounds and
rhythms of words constitute the elements of language. Poetry is characterized
by prosody. Prosody is the science of
patterns of rhythms. Since, rhythms
form is invented it is basis of poetry so it is often compared to music. This
is because of the fact that music too is qualified by the presence of rhythms.
This
word poem is often used in the sense of an individual piece of work. Poetry is
a collected work. In other words, we can say that….
“It is a Collective Term used to
Indicate many pieces of individual
poems.”
Poetry
is a form whereas a poem is a written piece of work. Just as an artist uses
colors to breathe life to his art in the same a poet uses words to give
expression to his experiences and emotional life. A poet employs different
techniques and poetic devices to bring out the aesthetic value of words. These
words are capable of conveying the underlying emotions. As a result, they are
able to lead to liberation. A poem can be defined as a piece of writing in
which, the words are exactly chosen for the ideas and images they are capable
of etching in the minds of their readers.
In
short, it can be said that…….
“Poetry is one of the forms of fine
arts. A poem is the fundamental unit of poetry.”
It
can therefore be said that……
“Poetry is made of poems.”
In other words we can
say that……
“Poems constitute the art form of
poetry.”
After
above differences it is our duty to understand The Norms of Poetry-Writing.
Which give us and bring us down to the new world of Poetry.
First
all there are 7 Norms of Poetry-Writing which we can understand and see
throughout the following table view
NORMS
OF POETRY - WRITING

Regular Rhythm

Rhyme

Music

1.
Regular
Rhythm:-
As
we read it, we cannot hear the regular beat of sound, like the regular tramp of
soldiers marching or the regular beat of the feet of people dancing? There is
nothing like this regular swing in prose passage. It is because by the fact
that the poet arranges his words in such a way that the accented syllables, on
which we naturally law stress in speaking, come at equal intervals. If all
accented syllables in the first line are italicized we will see that every
second syllable must be pronounced more loudly or emphatically the other. The
regular rising and falling in the flow of sounds in poetry, these recurring
intervals strong, and light sounds, like the beat of a Drum regulating Dance
movements, is called rhythm and rhythm is the chief and an essential characteristics
of verse as distinguished from prose.
2. Rhyme:-
The
next point we notice is that the words at the end of the first three lines all
have the same sound-low, snow, flow. When words have the same vowel sound and
end with the same consonant sound, they are said to Rhyme. Rhyme is not
necessary to verse but generally verse is rhymed. Rhyme serves two purposes; it make verse more musical
by giving it pleasing sounds like chimes of bell and it serves to preserve the
verse form in which the poem is arranged by making the ends of the lines.
3. Stanzas:-
If
we look at the whole of the poem, we will notice another characteristic of
verse. We will see that the poem is divided up into units and that all the
units or elements are exactly alike in form. Each unit is of six lines, the
First line rhyming with the Third, the Second with the Fourth and the Fifth
with the Sixth. Such Units or Elements or divisions in poems are called as Stanzas.
4. Verse:-
Verse
is then is characterized by regular rhythm rhyme and stanzas. Of these
characteristics rhythm is essential. We cannot have verse or poetry without
rhyme. But while most poems have rhyme and stanza forms, these are not
essential characteristics of poetry, for we have poems written in Blank-Verse
that is verse in which each line has ten
syllables but there are no rhymes at the end.
5. Music:-
The
first characteristics of poetry are verbal music. The poet choose instinctively
words of beautiful sound and so arranges them that the words near each other
will harmonize in sound, so as to produce what may be called “ Word
Music”. And he varies this music to suit the subject, so that the sound
of the lines helps to make their meaning clearer. The first and for most
thing we must do is to read the poem through carefully. Then we must ask
ourselves. The poet tells us that as he was taking a solitary walk besides a
lake one bright and breezy morning, he suddenly came upon a sight that filled
him with delighted wonder of its gaiety of heart. The stretched before his
wondering gaze thousands and thousands soft yellow daffodils under the trees
beside the sparkling waters of the lake.
7.
Language: - The
language should be lucid and simple in nature.
Different types of Poetry:-
“Poetry is the spontaneous overflow
of powerful feelings;
it takes its origin from emotion
recollected in tranquility.”
-
William
Wordsworth
Poetry
is a collective name given for poems in general, similar to all literature,
poetry is not constrained to a particular type, and we come across different
styles of expressing emotions. This is the only reason why, we have so many
types of poems. Poetry is a major form of literature. It is in a position to
subordinate medium to transmute emotions. It appeals to man’s soul. It evokes
emotions and brings up pictures through effective descriptions.
Poetry
is………..
“The best words in their best
order.”
S.T. Coleridge says that……..
“The style of writing and the arrangement of
words
Differentiate poetry from prose.”
Prose
consists of a set of sentences and a poem makes use of rhythmically arranged
sentences- often placed one below the other for effect. Poetry uses different
techniques like meter, rhyme and sound devices to reveal the deeper aspects of
the experiences of the poet. It is also used as a measure to highlight the
theme.
